Leon Murphy opened the scoring and finished it off as Ayr United Academy 20s battled to a 2-2 draw in Maybole on Wednesday night.

On a day where residents of an Ayrshire village ten miles away were being warned not to approach a loose ostrich, there was no deterring a healthy local crowd that were treated to an impressive Maybole performance and witnessed an Ayr side smattered with first-team players and emerging youngsters breaking through.

The 20s featured a blend of first-team players, the 20s squad and upcoming 17s players in an experimental line-up looking to catch the eye of Ian McCall, who was in attendance at Ladywell Park hours after penning a deal to extend his stay as Ayr boss until 2018.

New recruits Andy O'Connell and Michael Rose started whilst Academy products Mick Wardrope and Craig McCracken linked up in central midfield.

The visitors started the game brightly and quickly took control. The McCracken/Wardrope axis first clicked into gear in the sixth minute when the former unleashed a 25-yard strike that flew wide of the goal. Wardrope quickly followed suit but his drive on 13 minutes was straight down the throat of the Maybole goalkeeper.
