AUFC Talk / Re: Cup Game - Auchinleck Talbot v Ayr Utd
« on: January 19, 2019, 14:44:37  »
It's a hard one to take but don't think it warrants the "one of the greatest Scottish Cup shocks of all time" tag.  Talbot are a good side, unbeaten for over three months, playing with confidence at home with the whole town there today to support them; Ayr on the other hand are weakened through injury, struggling to score at the moment, and consequently low in confidence.  Hopefully now with the Cup out of the way, we can turn things around and make a decent promotion challenge starting on Friday when Dundee Utd come to Somerset!

Sad news.  As a wee boy in the 1970s I used to love watching Willie sprint on to the pitch with his wee black bag in one hand, miraculously healing all injuries with sponge and water!  Those were the days ...
RIP, Willie, Davie, Johnny ...

F***** magic!!  We are now, without doubt, the best team in the Championship.  And if we can hold on to Lawro beyond January, WE-ARE-(definitely)-GOING-UP!!

Have always felt privileged to have seen Davie Stewart in goal for Ayr and to see him go on to even greater things at Leeds not to mention his cap for Scotland.  Sympathies to his family and friends.

I loved watching Johnny Graham play for Ayr United.  So many appearances, so many great (and valuable) goals.  Can't believe he's not already in the Hall of Fame.

Agree that the 2-0 win over Killie in '98 was one of the best--have replayed that video countless times.  The semi-final win over Hibs is another obvious highlight--being there to witness us getting to our first major final was something I will never forget!

Seeing Ayr beat Celtic 3-2 in the League Cup ('74) in was a special night for a wee laddie in only his second-ever visit to Somerset Park. Somner, Mitchell (penalty) and Ingram got the goals against a team which had McNeill, Johnstone, Hood, Lennox and Dalglish.

Another favourite was a 3-2 win over Motherwell in April 78 when Willie Pettigrew's two goals were cancelled out by a wonderful hat-trick from wee Gordon Cramond RIP.

Great away support yesterday and a result well deserved.  Took my 9-year-old nephew who lives in Glasgow along to the game (his first time ever watching Ayr Utd) and he's already asking his dad if he'll take him to Alloa on Tuesday!
