don't think he is but i think he'll be signing for sure....would also be good if Moore signed but he may be thinking he'll be 3rd choice again & seek pastures new.

Hopefully he thinks he's got a point to prove in the championship after sitting out most of the campaign the last time we were in there 7 signs on the dotted line , if not we have been linked with the lad Duggan at east fife who looked a fast  decent player....

I can't see Declan being with us next season.  The last two games (Alloa away and Albion Rovers at Home) there was the same scout sitting in the stand.  He was from Preston North End and there to see Declan McDaid.  The last game Declan was outstanding, so I expect he will be moving on as they will offer a very good package and a chance to play down south.  The lad served us well and is a great prospect.

i suppose we'll need to wait for Ian McCall to come back his holidays now in a weeek , but what about a keeper?

He's apparantly talking to michael Rose today according to his interview, oh and hope Robbie Crawford signs on when he meets him next week.........surely all the positivity at the club will help us sign players & keep our best ones

What relegated us last time was having nothing up front all season. With Moore, Moffat and Shankland signed that has already gone away. Not ignoring other positions but probably easier to fill if others move on. Already getting confident that we have most of the tools to at the very least survive.

Have to agree Ghostofjimmysmith.  The attacking options are what done us before and with these signings it is giving us a fighting chance for next season.  Canny wait.

Looking quite a squad.. what about this young keeper, he had a good performance against France so no doubt about ability and won player of the year (I think) so possibly also indicates consistency.

Can't blame Hart for leaving, knows he'd be second choice and spend all season on the bench.
And if he did get a game he'd get pelters at the first slip up.

I get McCall's point from the AP about keeping the squad together and waiting till folks have signed to know the budget. But even taking into account McDaid might still sign  we have known that we needed a keeper since the end of the season - why did he keep Hart hanging on for so long - and we have known since Boyle was released that we need a left back - unless Finn Ecrepont is going straight into the team.

Great that we have resigned who we have but would like to see left back and goalkeeper sorted out quickly.

On Hart, he and Ruddy should have got a special SPFL award for no-handedly keeping the league one title race interesting.

Still only rumours floating about are Mcrorie the goalie and Harvie the left back. However just to keep everyone positive, this was our squad on the opening game of our last seasom in the championship two years ago;

GK Greg Fleming

DR Nicky Devlin
DC Darryl Meggatt
DC Peter Murphy
DL Paddy Boyle

MR Robbie Crawford
MC Ross Docherty
MC Jamie Adams
MC Paul Cairney
ML Michael Donald

FC Alan Forrest

Subs

Jordan Hart
Michael Rose
Craig McCracken
Mick Wardrope
Craig McGuffie
Jamie Thomas
Andy O'Connell

So i'd say our current squad is much better than that.

Agreed we are in much better shape - in principle - we went down last time because we had no decent strikers - we currently have 3.

However we have known we needed a left back since 1st May, can't help thinking anyone we are going for doesn't fancy it for some reason - training in Ayr? Obvious Hart was never going to be first choice so similarly known we needed a keeper for ages. No signed right back - Ferguson all right but not a superstar so not sure why we are letting negotiations go on so long unless we have really have nobody else lined up.

Post by: Try6Place on June 22, 2018, 11:00:27
Agreed. Whilst it's great we've resigned decent players, still need new blood to STRENGTHEN. Doesn't fill me with confidence the idea of youthful/inexperienced keeper / leftback, hopefully be proved wrong. Don't think Ayr United will be a big enough draw for players until at least we are an established championship side, if that is possible. Think the off field side of club is letting us down, despite all the recent efforts, not enough. Not nearly good enough.

Don't have all the answers but we need a better or even a presence in the town and surrounding area, in a positive way somehow make it obvious we have a senior side locally, try to get good relations with local area.
I know the folk at club and volunteers are working hard and preparing for sponsor events etc., but don't really get the buzz around town. Maybe not going to the right places.

Great to see a general tidy and improvements to the stadium ie toilets,pa system and a good team of volunteers. However we can't rely on the donations of hard earned cash from 500 club members or the likes of the club shop to fund our season.Bums on seats is always the best way to get money in ,just another 100 punters is 1700 quid ,every empty hospitality box is another 1000 quid it's not rocket science but after our great season last year I just don't think we sell the club enough .Any money making ideas like the shirt sponsor draw or individual player sponsors ,season tickets etc we don't go and sell,it's usually up to people to go to the club !!!!! Really need to be more aggressive in selling ,going round businesses in the town ,leaflets through doors, posters to remind people we actually have a team,it's not everyone who looks at Facebook every day to see what's happening.

heard that our budget is bust & that the directiors have again had to dip into their pockets, fair play to them but hardly the news we need before the season has even started 7 we are without  a keepper or left back..

apparantly the left back we were after from QOS has resigned with them as well....
Title: Re: 2018 / 2019 - Players In / Out.
Post by: ghostofjimmysmith on June 26, 2018, 08:25:22
Off the field, some evidence of a scouting network would be a massive improvement - as happens every summer under McCall, good work convincing players to stay etc  is undermined by the inability to have anyone lined up for positions we need to fill- as well a lb and goalkeeper we still have no signed right back - unless Geggan expected to play there.

We have known since May 1st we needed a left back and I assume the decision was made privately long before then by McCall to release Boyle.

Get the guy who flooded this site with signing suggestions to get in touch with McCall and sort it out ;-)

I take it sleazy CalvinAyre's money goes into a black hole and the club continue to attempt to fleece the die hards instead of attempting to make local connections. In the long term it hasn't worked. We just bumble along with no real plan, success dependant on how we are doing on the field. Can't the directors get out and about and make an impression. Not everything needs to cost a great deal of money or time, just to raise our local profile.

Decent signing at left back, young but done well at this level previously - by implication of what McCall says in the AP we identified Harvie as the right player and held out for him so I'll take my comments back, maybe there is some evidence of a plan.

Surprised it didn't go all pear shape if he signed for someone else and then we would still be looking for the left back. I guess behind the scenes it was known a done deal but never a deal until signed, still can't forget Shackland story of heading to Somerset to sign but ended up at Morton.

Can't help but thinking Shankland signed for us at the right time - had the above happened he would have been coming off the back of poor spell with St Midden, so we would have had low expectations/limited patience as we were looking for a saviour, and joining struggling team and would probably not have worked for him.

Joined us last season when we were playing well , we had limited expectations when he arrived but weren't looking for a saviour. Totally regained his confidence and absolutely massive amount of goodwill/patience built up with the support, so will be given time, by us at least, to adapt to the championship. I think that played a big part in his decision to  stay with us - knowing he will get the chance to adapt, develop and deliver - went anywhere else as a 25+ goal striker and the expectation would be to hit the ground running immediately.

I think Shankland will do well this season coming but there may be some adapting so might not happen straight away - a lot of his play last season was like watching an under 20 boy playing with the under 14's, he was that far ahead of everyone - will be a wee bit harder in the weeks/months to come.

I am very pleased that we have managed to keep a settled squad and I believe that those who were released were the correct decisions.  I am looking forward to the step up and new challenge.  Last year it was July when Ian McCall brought in his new signings, so looking forward to seeing if there is more to come.  Have to say the goalkeeper situation worries me though. C'mon the Ayr!

Ferguson is away on loan to Dumbarton.

Muirhead has a good pedigree and experience in the bottom half of the premier league.  Looks like he is the replacement for Michael Rose and he is in the squad for Friday night.  Expecting to see him come on with 20 minutes to go as a makeshift centre-forward.

Good to see some movement but if Ferguson and McGuffie are away who is going to be on the bench given our injury situation?

Also irrespective of quality I'm not sure a centre half is what we really need - especially if budget is limited - we have Rose (moving to Coventry before July maybe?), Higgins, Bell and Adams (is he out for the season?) who can play in that position.

Personally I think we need a Stevo type player (drive forward through the middle and will hit a shot from outside the box(our biggest problem)) and a Roberts like striker (tricky, intelligent, on the deck footballer) to give us some options as I think everyone, even junior teams, has worked out how to nullify us - haven't a scooby who to suggest as players who fall into those categories.

If we are waiting on key players to come back can we at least do a couple of month long loans of decent players not getting a game elsewhere.

I am with you ghostofjimmysmith with regard to what we need to progress the playing staff at this time.  I am glad to hear Ian McCall say in his recent interview that he is looking to sign a forward playing player and he hopes for this piece of business to be concluded soon.  Excited to see who it could be, because we are desperate right now, with the injury to Shankland and Moore hitting a bit of a blip with his form.

Looking forward to getting the frustrating results of recent weeks out of our system.  A win tonight would be a start.

Good to bring some new players in for a wee change in the January window but for me the best bit is no major departures.

Rose, Bell, Muirhead and Adams all ahead of him at cb so actually not that surprising - time looked up the moment we signed Muirhead.

Too hard to give any meaningful suggestions given we don't know what division we will be in but I would suggest given our injury problems this season we should be looking at players who were available for 80%+ of their current sides matches this season even if they did not start ie not injured.

I think we need to cut adrift some of the perennially injured/miss at least 10 games a season in the current squad no matter how popular.

From the 'out of contracts' expect Crawford, McDaid and Shankland to be signed up quickly and move elsewhere.
Hope we can keep a hold of Geggan, McCowan and Moff.
I love Jamie Adams as he is so versatile and rarely has a bad game, but his injury problems are never ending.
After that lets see some freshness in the squad.  This might bring about some competition and hopefully some confidence to a team who were excellent for 70% of the season.

If we go up serious upgrading required so really can't sign up to many before the season ends.

As per previous post, need to look at moving on those that miss 10-15 games every season through injury no matter how popular.

I doubt Ferguson and McGuffie will be there next season despite being contracted.

Louis Longridge released by Dunfermline would be a decent and not unrealistic signing as he was one of their better players - I would imagine he will be back to the SPL with someone else though.

Higginbotham released as well - he would be worth signing to fill the obligatory scapegoat role -  things would genuinely be his fault - thus taking the pressure off of Harvie/Crawford/Moore or whoever else's turn it is.

Be interesting to see who stays/goes and where they end up - I have a funny feeling it will be a wtf moment when Shankland signs for Dundee or St Johnstone or someone else equally underwhelming.

I would like us to try and find a midfielder who will look to shoot and can blooter it from thirty yards, either scoring or getting a parry that falls to the enrushing striker - McCowan might have that in his game. I think the lack of an out of the box midfield goal threat was as much our undoing as injuries and opponents working out how to play against us.

Players who aren't only fit July-November also a must.

I expect we will be linked with Jordan Preston when Shankland leaves.

McDaid refused terms and left the club. Not sure how I feel, archetypal lower league winger, unplayable on some occasions, on plenty of other occasions could kick his backside others/get corner past the first man. Highlight of his time was the games against Dundee United, low point the comedy long shorts/high socks and abject display against Talbot.
