Sad news indeed, as Our goalie from the Late 60,s Early 70,s has passed away...R.I.P.....71 Years of age...
Johnny Graham not long ago now another club legend 'The Man in Black '.
Davie Stewart was an excellent keeper for us - the first name in the team that older supporters can recite without hesitation. He also played in the European Cup Final for Leeds United and played for his country. A credit to the game of football.
Rest in peace Davie.
Very fond memories of Davie playing in Ayr goals. That era was when I started watching Ayr, and what a great goalkeeper he was
Thanks for all the memories
Absolutely magnificent goalkeeper and a credit to Ayr United. So sad to hear of this. We seem to be losing our greatest players but that's what time does, I suppose.
Some memories from fan John Dalton
Just heard that the 'Man in Black' Davie Stewart has passed away after a period of ill health.
Davie is a legend to an older generation of Ayr fans. He joined in 1967 from Kilsyth Rangers where he had won the Scottish Junior Cup that season and Ally MacLeod made him his No1 as we won promotion to the top flight.
A few months later he was playing in front of Somerset Park's record crowd of 25,225 (officially) as Ayr beat Rangers 2-1
He then joined Leeds, playing in the 1975 European Cup Final where they lost to Bayern Munich before playing for West Brom. While at the Hawthorns Ally gave him his one and only Scotland cap in a 1-0 defeat in East Germany (I seem to recall he saved a penalty in that game?) Before joining Swansea where he helped them win promotion to the top flight in England for the first time playing under John Toshack before finishing up playing in Hong Kong
I had the pleasure of meeting Davie a couple of times and interviewed him for the Ayr United programme around 20 years ago. He was an absolute gentleman and a humble man who will forever be a legend amongst my generation of Ayr United supporters
With the death of Johnny Graham and now Davie Stewart, my childhood memories have taken a battering recently. I hope the Club will give them some recognition for their part in the greatest Ayr United side ever
RIP Davie, one of the best if not the best goalkeepers to ever to don an Ayr shirt....
So sad to hear this news. Davie Stewart was my hero and the greatest keeper we ever had. Johnny Graham was a true leader who led by example.
Deepest sympathies to the Stewart and Graham family circle.
RIP you Honest Men.
Have always felt privileged to have seen Davie Stewart in goal for Ayr and to see him go on to even greater things at Leeds not to mention his cap for Scotland. Sympathies to his family and friends.
